Harriett Baldwin today announced plans to meet with consumer advice groups in advance of changes to the welfare system. The MP is arranging question and answer sessions with local groups including the Citizens Advice Bureau to discuss proposed changes to the way welfare and benefits are organised. Around 1.5 million people across the UK will have their benefits reassessed in 2011 under proposals introduced under the last Government. These changes are likely to impact people across the county so Harriett is planning to meet with advisory groups to help clarify the changes. Harriett said: “Next year people who claim incapacity benefits will be contacted to see if the Government can help them find work. “Under the old system people were left without the option of working but were consigned to a lifetime dependent on state handouts. “This reassessment will help people who can work and want to work back into employment. I do know that advisory organisations are expecting people to contact them for help so I am taking this step to brief them so that they understand the process. People who are truly incapacitated and unable to work will receive more support than they do now.”
