Harriett Baldwin today congratulated Sir Michael Spicer on the announcement from Minister for Health Services Ben Bradshaw to go ahead with a £19.3 million new hospital in Malvern.

Harriett Baldwin said, "This is the best Christmas present Malvern could receive. Sir Michael Spicer has been relentless in highlighting the need for a new hospital in Malvern to the NHS authorities for many years. He was also instrumental in securing the Seaford Court site 20 years ago. In addition, we invited Shadow Health Secretary Andrew Lansley to Malvern last April to see the importance of securing a new hospital on the site. It is wonderful to see this constant campaigning pressure pay off."

It was Andrew Lansley who discovered in the answer to a parliamentary question that 85p in every £1 spent by the government since 1997 on new hospitals has been spent in constituencies with a Labour MP. Perhaps by highlighting this, the current government has wanted to demonstrate that new hospitals can still be opened in Conservative constituencies as well."
