Government to pass law to safeguard fairer school funding

10th February 2020

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin met with local secondary school headteachers to confirm that an improved funding deal will be backed by law.

The Government will pass legislation meaning that local secondary schools will get at least £5,000 per pupil from September. Headteachers had expressed concerns that local authorities are planning to ‘top-slice’ the education budget meaning that schools get lower funding than promised.

Harriett has raised teachers’ concerns with the Department for Education and she agreed to pass on the message back to local schools that there are plans to legislate to protect the fairer funding deal.

Harriett commented: “I regularly meet with headteachers and they have raised some concerns about how county councils are allowed to take a slice out of the school’s budgets to fund their own Department – meaning that the schools end up with a worse deal than promised.

“Fairer funding has been one of my key election pledges and we’re making great progress. The Department for Education has been listening to teachers’ concerns and is planning to legislate to protect the minimum per pupil funding deal.

“This news has been welcomed by the headteachers who I have spoken to in recent weeks, and there is a degree of optimism within the community about the future, as we seek to level up school funding even more.”
