Nationality and Borders Bill

Thank you for contacting me about the Nationality and Borders Bill which is currently being debated in the House of Lords.

I am very proud of the UK’s history of helping those fleeing persecution, oppression or tyranny from around the world. Recently, I supported the decision from Worcestershire County Council to welcome at least 200 refugees fleeing Afghanistan under the Taliban’s regime and have supported to local community as it extends the hand of friendship to those who need it most. If you are able to offer help with accommodation please e-mail resettlement@worcestershire.gov.uk.

I know there have been concerns over the use of new asylum reception centres. Let me assure you that these centres will be safe, secure, and adequate provisions will be provided to those staying. The reception centre model is successfully being safely used in many European countries such as Denmark or Switzerland.

This will circumvent the need of using private hotels, where I know constituents have had their holidays plans cancelled as their booked hotels have been taken over by the Government for refugee accommodation.

I am convinced that this Bill will act in the best interest of the British people to protect our citizens while also continuing our proud tradition of resettlement to genuine refugees and I will monitor this issue closely when the legislation returns to the House of Commons.

Thank you for contacting me.
