Homelessness

Thank you for contacting me about homelessness.

A single person without a roof over their head is one too many, and it is important that the most vulnerable people are helped to get their lives back on track. I stood on a commitment to end rough sleeping once and for all and I am pleased that steps are being taken to ensure this.

Decisive action is being taken to end rough sleeping. I am encouraged by the hard work of local councils, charities and the Government in protecting thousands of rough sleepers and vulnerable people, not least during the pandemic. It is therefore encouraging to learn that the Annual Rough Sleeping Snapshot for 2020 indicates a 37 per cent decrease in rough sleeping levels compared with the previous year.

The Government has announced an investment of a further £639 million each year by 2024-25 toward tackling homelessness and rough sleeping. This reflects an 85 per cent cash increase compared to 2019-20 and will help to build on the significant progress already made to reduce and prevent rough sleeping.

Please be assured that I will continue to raise the important issue of the impact of homelessness with Ministers and colleagues. If you know of any individual cases of homeless individuals who need help, please tell them that they can contact me.
