Don't forget to have your say on the South Worcestershire Joint Core Strategy
Conservatives to abolish Regional Spatial Strategy Harriett has welcomed David Cameron’s speech announcing Conservative plans to devolve power to local councils and abolish regional government. In particular the pledge to abolish the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) which would have an immediate impact in Worcestershire. Harriett said, “At the moment, our three South Worcestershire local councils are being forced by the government to implement a Regional Spatial Strategy which requires them to find room for 24,500 new homes, perhaps even 30,000 if the Nathaniel Lichfield report is accepted. I reject this top-down, Stalinist approach to planning.”
“I particularly welcome the fact that councils will be able to revise their existing Local Development Frameworks. This will allow councils to protect land, such as Green Belt, which regional spatial strategies have zoned for development.”
She added, “These words bring hope to the Worcestershire communities fighting the loss of green field sites. Gordon Brown has to call a General Election before June 2010. The current Local Development Plans expire in 2011. All we need now is a Conservative majority government.”

Andrew Mitchell, Shadow International Development Minister visits Worcestershire Farmers Overseas Action Group Andrew Mitchell MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Development visited Worcestershire Farmers Overseas Action Group (FOAG) at Powick this month. The charity, which was founded by Worcestershire farmers in 1981, helps social and economic development in Uganda’s rural communities. Mr. Mitchell takes a deep interest in African development issues, taking a team of volunteers to Rwanda three years in a row. The Conservative Party has pledged, if elected, to increase spending on international development to 0.7% of GDP. Some of this budget would go directly to charities. Harriett Baldwin, who invited Mr. Mitchell to Powick said, “FOAG is an inspiring example of social action from Worcestershire farmers. They have been able to transfer skills in a sustainable way to rural communities in Uganda. I hope that Mr. Mitchell’s visit will help to publicise their remarkable work.”

Conservatives launch campaign to Save the Great British Pub
With nearly 6 pubs closing every day of the week, and local pubs under threat, the Conservatives believe that the Government should be doing more to save the Great British pub. 33% of the price of every pint goes in Beer Tax to the Chancellor. Now the Government plans to increase beer tax further. Harriett has joined calls for the Government to help save our pubs and safeguard jobs by: - Cutting taxes on lower alcohol drinks such as low alcohol beers and raising taxes on problem drinks like high strength ciders and alcopops in order to use the tax system to target binge drinking whilst ensuring that responsible drinkers and the traditional British pub are not unfairly penalised
- Enforcing existing laws to deal firmly with irresponsible drinkers & premises
- Trusting adults to make informed choices, not punish them for the actions of an irresponsible minority
- Supporting the British pub as a vital part of local communities
