New MP to consult constituents over private bill

10th June 2010

Harriett Baldwin is in the running to introduce a Private Member’s Bill to the House of Commons and reflecting the new era of consultative politics, Harriett is asking for her constituents to suggest ideas for private members bills before submitting a proposal to parliament.

Harriett commented: “It’s a huge privilege to get a chance to introduce a bill to the House, and as a new MP I think it’s only right to consult the people who elected me.

“I’m asking for the people of West Worcestershire to put their thinking caps on an suggest laws that will make a difference to us and the whole country.

“Very few MPs get the chance to do this and I am very excited by the chance to make a change so early in my political career.”

Harriett’s name was drawn seventh in the ballot to introduce a Bill to the House of Commons – meaning it is very likely that her legislation will be heard in the new session of Parliament. Just 20 MPs get a chance to introduce a Bill in each parliamentary term.
Rules indicate that any Private Member's Bill must not amend tax law or incur additional Government spending.

The consultation was announced on BBC Hereford and Worcester’s drivetime show presented by Nathan Turvey. More information on the consultation process will be published on this website.
