MP joins school at Upton dig

20th January 2012

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin today joined schoolchildren looking into the past at an archaeological dig in Upton-Upon-Severn.

The MP was given a tour of the site which is being studied by experts whilst work is carried out on the new flood defences.

Local schoolchildren from Upton Primary School were invited to the dig and joined Harriett on a tour of the site.

The work has already uncovered human remains, a ‘marker stone’ and evidence of two bridges – including one dating back to before the Civil War.

Harriett commented: “It was extremely exciting to see the evidence of a very old bridge and there have been plenty of other interesting discoveries.

“I enjoyed seeing the children from the local area getting a chance to see the work up close and it was clearly very exciting for them to see how archaeology is carried out.

“I hope that this has inspired some of them to try their hand at archaeology and look back into our local history.

“I am sure that in decades to come, some of these school children will be able to have a drink at the riverside and remember the time when they saw these amazing discoveries first hand.”
