Local Candidate highlights start of Prostate Cancer Awareness month

1st March 2010

Harriett Baldwin, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate highlights the prevalence prostate disease in West Worcestershire.

As Prostate Cancer Awareness month begins Harriett Baldwin has been learning more about prostate disease in West Worcestershire and what men can do to be aware of their own prostate health.

Around 34,000 men in Worcestershire PCT1-3 are likely to suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 19 per 100,000 of the population have died as a result of prostate cancer4. Prostate cancer kills one man every hour in Britain5. Early detection of a prostate disease vastly improves the chances of successful treatment so education of the public and of healthcare professionals is vital.

Amanda McLean, Chief Executive of Prostate UK said, 'One in two men will suffer from a prostate disease at some stage in their lives. We are very pleased that Harriett is helping to highlight the issue of prostate disease, especially during Prostate Cancer Awareness month. By increasing awareness we hope more men will understand the very simple steps they can take to find out about their own prostate health. Hopefully a wider understanding of the issues will put a stop to prostate disease ruining lives'.

Harriett Baldwin said, “I am delighted to be helping to draw attention to Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, as a close relative has the ailment, which is being treated successfully.”
