Harriett welcomes more women MPs

13th June 2017

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin will today take up her seat in Parliament alongside a record number of female colleagues.

There are now 208 women in the House of Commons out of 650 MPs – the highest ever number up from 191 elected in 2015.

Harriett has been an active campaigner to get more women serving in Parliament and last month visited Malvern St James School to talk to pupils about her life in politics.

Harriett commented: “We still have a long way to go to reach equality of numbers in the House of Commons but I am pleased to see many more female Members joining me this week to take up a seat in Westminster.

“I was really encouraged by the enthusiasm of the girls I talked to at Malvern St James and I hope that by attending these sort of events I can inspire more women to get involved.

“I was also heartened that three women stood for election in West Worcestershire and having been returned as the local MP, I plan to continue my efforts to encourage more women to get involved in politics.”
