Flood defences questions raised by MP

1st June 2010

County MP Harriett Baldwin has this week tabled her first questions in parliament to ensure that flood defences for West Worcestershire are on the coalition government’s agenda.

The West Worcestershire MP today said she has raised the issue of funding for flood defences in Kempsey, Uckinghall, Powick, Pershore, Upton-upon-Severn and Tenbury Wells with Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman.

The questions were timed to coincide with the start of flood defence work in Pershore.

Harriett commented:
“During my election campaign I committed to continuing the fight to bring proper flood defences to many communities across the constituency.

“I have no reason to believe that budgets have changed, but at this moment where the new government tackles the budget deficit, I have tabled a question before the Secretary of State for the Environment to ensure that the flood defence budget includes money for improving the flood defences in West Worcestershire.

”It is vital that this matter is picked up by our new coalition Government so that the Environment Agency will be able to act to protect homes affected by flooding year after year. I will also be meeting the Regional Manager from the Environment Agency in the House of Commons on June 24th.”
